Sans soleil
SANS SOLEIL, is a musical and immersive show project bringing into dialogue traditional Japanese music through selected pieces from the Gagaku repertoire, and electro-acoustic, electronic music in a scenic device modified by the presence of a dancer and two musicians. Its foothold in Japan, whose culture is marked by the impermanence of things, tradition and modernity, is a gateway to address more universal themes such as transmission and memory. Sans soleil is a preliminary space, a place of meeting and transition, where the question of the incarnation of identities, of the collapse and of the emptiness with which one must live, of the importance of being with all one’s might arises. and a trace in the present, through what looks like a ceremony close to trance.
In Japan there is an ambivalent term: “Ukiyo”. It refers both to the Buddhist notion which conveys the idea of the reality of a world whose only certainty is impermanence and is also an artistic movement in the Edo period (Ukiyo-e) which in contrary celebrates the present moment. It is a question here of interpreting and reappropriating in the form of musical and dramaturgical writing the different interpretations of this notion in order to conceive a contemporary rereading of it and to reveal its resonances at a time of climatic, industrial and environment that surrounds us.
The cross-writing of the performance of the choreographer Vania Vaneau, the scenic space, the music are suspended between contemplation and chaos, subjected to a moving and organic deterioration populated by appearances. The individual, constantly jostled and heckled by a universe or reasoning different fields of action and emotions, continues to evolve and metamorphose. The Gagaku, imperial and secular sacred music, identical reproduction of a thousand-year-old music, works like a mantra and conveys the reassuring side of a routine, of something immutable in a constantly evolving world in the grip of anguish. collapse and end of a world.
